We are held in a hazy summer evening on the cusp of darkness where the heat of the day still lingers and everything whispers around you of the coming night. Synapses are now softened by whatever is in this hip flask and has passed from your lips to mine, and it’s tumbled inside in waves of anticipation. There is nothing to do but be here, everywhere to go but time yet so no rush to start that journey. Everything is still to come.

And so, is the memory of youth, and the yearning for it. Something London-based four-piece The Other Ones have given in to on Forever Young the second single from their forthcoming self-titled debut album.

Brimming with ’90s alt-rock riffs the track centres around the lost feeling of standing on the threshold with all the possibilities laid before you, the freedom to choose and direct yourself as you will without the tethers of everyday life. The song is an ode to the adventure of coming of age and while it wears those musical influences on its sleeve it avoids being cloyingly nostalgic and rather swings and hits at bittersweet anthem.

About the track the band said, “Forever Young is a song about yearning – about wanting to run away from a humdrum existence, going for a drive with your best friend, throwing caution to the wind, and living for yourself. It’s hard to capture that feeling of limitless wonder from childhood, but when you have the right person with you, anything feels possible.“

With harmonies softening the riffs, and sparingly used pace-changes the track builds and draws you in, draws you back; a postcard from the past you can no longer visit. This one catches you in the heart as much as it keeps running through your brain, and if you’ve missed the big ballsy power-pop summer hits of your younger years The Other Ones are here to deliver in spades.

Forever Young by The Other Ones is out digitally on 5 February 2021 and is followed by a self-titled album later in the month, both via Reckless Yes.
