Described as a ‘trans-national, genre-blending, musical riot, ready to rock your ears and mess with your brain’ Brighton-based four-piece Genn has returned with a hazy psych-pop single, Feel, ahead of the release of their EP Liminal this March.

From heart-racing rhythms the track slowly expands, the punctuation of percussion acting as an anchor against which the loose-limbed vocal line tugs languidly as the song stretches and edges beyond its boundaries. It is a track which hints at escape, a lure toward seeming liberation that softly destroys as you sink into it. What it’s thankfully not – as so many gaze-infused psych-pop tracks turn out to be – is self-indulgent or excessive: this roomy track carries no slack.

‘Let’s go round in circles / you know where the wild things go’

Leona Farrugia of the band said of the track: “Musically, the song was inspired by the Doors and Lou Reed’s Walk On The Wild Side – it’s drone-centred and infused with psychedelic elements, giving space for the vocals to shine through. It culminates in a shoegazey bridge that showcases our love for experimentation, ’70’s music and jamming. The lyrics personify a relationship with drugs and the dependency that stems from that sense of escapism.”

The second track to be released from the EP, following last year’s 23rd March, sees the band emerge from a fruitful 2020 where as well as critical praise they were semi-finalists in the GRAMMY-endorsed, New York City-based eFestival Listen to Womxn and represented Malta and the UK at Music Europe Day.

Feel and 23rd March together show a sound for the EP which seems to be moving away from the punk-rock of their 2018 debut album Titty Monster, and a band who are bringing broad influences and bolder experimentation to the fore.

Feel by Genn is out now digitally with EP Liminal to follow in March on vinyl, CD and digital, all through Everything Sucks Music.
