Returning with their first album in two years this September Sylvan Esso have released the first single from it with Ferris Wheel. A song of transformation and empowerment it’s typical of the duo with vocal melodies dancing around glitchy beats breaking through clean production.

Like so many coming of age (whatever your age) stories it’s set in the freedom and sultry night air of summer. It’s the bright popping fairground lights mixing with the stars as you spin across a grassy dancefloor. It’s a whirl of blurred faces and the sudden clarity of things which didn’t mean much to you before that moment. The beat drops just like your heart when you realise who and what you are, what you can be.

‘It’s summer / Got a lot to prove / Can’t wait to do it / Can you’

The duo – Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn – say the track is “about discovering your power and awkwardly figuring out how to wield it. It’s for the summer, it’s for you, we hope you like it.”

Fans of the band’s previous work are going to love the track. Light but lush there’s a playfulness to the call and response melodic lines, and the squelch of the bass beats. Shimmers of percussion before breakthroughs of laughter in the drops. It’s a welcome return and a tantalising introduction to what might be to come with the album.

Album Free Love is due for release on 25 September 2020.
