Described as ‘a 40 something, queer, English woman living in Philadelphia, PA, still playing punk rock three decades in because it’s fun and she needs it!’ Lou Hanman will be familiar to listeners of Caves and Flamingo50 but with Looks Right she debuts her solo project under the All About Lou name, ahead of a slated long player.
And what an intro it is – if you’re a fan of sunny-sounding introspective punk pop you’re going to fall immediately and deeply for this track. Exploring the strength and tenacity needed to stay true to yourself, and the reward which comes from pushing yourself to do so, the track is sparse lyrically but covers much thematic ground in its one and a half minutes.
‘Lighting the way to see further than today / Opening up all the truest parts of me’
There’s always plenty of these power pop tunes around, all shimmering guitars and soaring vocals sitting perfectly in the mix as the pace changes and your heart skips to keep up. But that makes it all the more special when one stands out from the crowd, which doesn’t just hold your attention for the duration but which so quickly becomes a solid feature of your internal jukebox.
Looks Right is one of those tracks, the friend you know you ought to be to yourself even – especially – on the harder days when the current of expected life threatens to carry you away from your desired life. Sonically and thematically it offers much hope in itself, and for more releases from All Away Lou.
Looks Right by All Away Lou is out digitally now on Specialist Subject, a long player is set to follow but more details and dates are yet to be confirmed.
