They call it futurepop. A dystopian future explored with a defiant joyfulness. Not to mention ’70s disco vibes, ’80s synth tones, ’90s dance beats, timeless indiepop hooks, a sparkly guitar, a glittery face and a all that comes with a messy but undeniably human heart.

Sheffield’s Pink Opaque bundle brilliant shimmery melody with wittily wonderful, intellectually playful lyrics. On Bringing Back The Humans, only their second single, they build a future world beyond the point at which the machines have taken over and into an age where those artificial overlords discover regret at getting rid of us.

It’s a hymn celebrating exactly what makes us human – often illogical, always quirky, and sometime inability to act in our own best interest. And of course the cheese-rolling.

“With the option to restore them / we’ve decided that we will / We want to watch them make some cheese / And then chase it down a hill”

Formed in 2024 Pink Opaque are indiepop artists Pete Green and Danielle Cope, who previously played together in The Sweet Nothings. Now they are off-setting grim modern life with their approach and band’s sound. They say, “The point, ultimately, is joy as praxis. The darker it gets outside, the more brightness Pink Opaque are determined to create.”

Sonically Bringing Back The Humans is absolutely banging electro-pop. It’s a hands-in-the-air, pogo-along, chorus-stuck-on-a-loop-in-your-brain bop. And it’s a calling card for what’s to come from Pink Opaque, which promises to be unmissable glitchy synthpop goodness.

Bringing Back The Humans by Pink Opaque is out digitally now.
