The Schla La Las

It’s 20 years on from the release of the debut EP and 18 since they called it a day. Now London rock n roll girl group The Schla La Las have reformed, and are marking the anniversary and reunion with the release of a new mix of a track from their early years, Up For It.

With a nostalgia laden video full of footage from their very first gig back in the mid-00s at the Bull and Gate (London) alongside modern takes of the band it showcases their indie tease (not indie sleaze, purleease) perfectly. With two bass players and plenty of harmony there is as much of the ’60s girl group in what they do as there is the 2005 guitar driven rock n roll.

In truth there is little that pins this band to that scene, or that moment in time, other than their story. Vee told Joyzine in a recent interview: “Some music is just timeless. The Schla’s are a pretty straight up band.. guitars and drums, no fancy sounds that particularly pin it down to the 00s, and the songwriting pulls on so many influences it all becomes a bit timeless.”

Timeless, and fun. Watching the original footage in the Up For It video there is a real sense of the camaraderie in the band – as much girl gang as girl group – and the charming, cheeky, and convivial vibes they put out. The modern footage shows little seems to have changed energetically with the band and whether past or present this is a gang you want to be a part of, a group you want to hear.

Up For It by The Schla La Las is released ahead of EP, The Schla La Las Are Out To Have Fun, due for release in November via No Distance Records.
