There is something fleetingly liberating about avoidance and self-destruction but the real rewards come with self-acceptance. Even when that has to be served with a middle-finger to all those who can’t support all of who you are. Brutalligators have given you a shout-along soundtrack to those vibes with latest single Train Wreck.
Less preppy but with moments of Weezer brightness, the scrappy and melodic fight of Martha, the indie-punk of PUP: all get blended in here. It makes for a ragingly fuzzy backdrop to some to-the-point blunt-is-beautiful lyrics you’ll be screaming from the depths of your worn out soul.
‘But when did answers become more like guessing / I suppose I’m happy in who I fucking am’
Vocalist / guitarist Luke Murphy said, “Sometimes you just need to write a banger. We wanted to write a big, gang-vocals-driven, chanty, fun punk song, with big singalong choruses. I think this is one of our dumbest songs lyrically, in the best possible way. In saying that, “my life’s a punchline that I didn’t get / just keep on laughing and it might make sense in the end” feels like the perfect summary of the last 10 years of my life.”
And Train Wreck is a banger you can break yourself down to and then start the rebuild. You’ll find sovereignty and solidarity in these big riffs. Nothing is easy, nothing is neat, nothing is quite the way you expected it to be, and you never seem to quite be who others want either. But fuck it. And fuck them. And sing this one really fucking loud as you don’t just accept but celebrate yourself.
Train Wreck by Brutalligators is out now digitally. Album Still Here is released on vinyl, CD and digital by Fika Recordings on 21 November 2025.
