“The song was born out of frustration and alienation while doing something as mundane as my laundry. That morning, I’d read about a domestic violence murder in my hometown. I remember standing there, staring at the washing machine, thinking about the absurdity of just carrying on,” Lead vocalist and songwriter Martina Moon said of the band’s latest track, continuing, “Laundry Mat is about that sense of urgency and helplessness – a call to stop sleepwalking through life.”
Leaning in to their Britpop influences, there is plenty of polish on the melody to offset the lyrics where they veer between numb and instinctual rawness. There are bright top notes, relentless and raggedy heartbeat rhythm, the lyrics which drip with vexation and fear, and vocals which move from velveteen to spitting spoken-word.
Hook-laden and high energy they are claiming this as their boldest statement as a band yet, and have tried to capture in the recording the loudness and emotion of playing the track live. As relative newcomers they’ve made good on those ambitions and as well as a great track in Laundry Mat are setting the scene for more good stuff to come.
