There is the softness of persistent rain, grey skies glowing iridescent when the light hits a certain way, vast open space, and the vibe that comes from being the last stop before the sea. All of this is infused in Something (I Know), the atmospheric single from Hull DIY collective O’Phantom.

There is much of the classic alternative sound permeating here too – a touch of Electronic, a little Stereolab, the merest hint of Sea Power – there is warmth in the chiming guitars and a quickening of the breath with the bass line. The melody rippling through chord changes, soft-edged vocal harmonies and then a shiver-down-the-spine vocal from Lucy of Dead Naked Hippies brings in an a Kate Bush-esque interlude.

‘Sometimes you can feel so alone / and so can I / I know that there’s something / you can’t deny’

The video (directed by Luke Hallet) evokes a heady blend of the unsettling mystery of Picnic At Hanging Rock and unfathomable goings on in English folklore. There is a feeling of not being quite tethered in the fields and woodland of the setting with moments of blurriness and the use light refraction and mirror reflections to prickle the senses. There may be something you know, but the video implies there is much more you do not.

Something (I Know) follows on from the debut self-titled EP they released in May this year. The DIY collective ethos is at the heart of it all, as the steady core evolve their sound with collaborations. They’ve gained fair interest in their releases so far, and have been rewarded with some tasty support slots and a spot at The Great Escape. Get this track on your playlists, explore the EP, and keep your eyes on O’Phantom as they’re already doing something pretty special.

Something (I Know) by O’Phantom is out digitally now. Their self-titled EP was released in May and is available on Bandcamp digitally or on cassette via their website.
