The Rainlamps – Lucky Breaks (self released)
Hailing from Buffalo, New York, The Rainlamps might seem to be offering standard indie with latest single Lucky Breaks but stick around – this track goes hard with surprisingly massive riffs and rolls of melody.

With a shimmering, guitar strum caress the opening first 30 seconds of Lucky Breaks by Buffalo New York indie rockers The Rainlamps could have you believe this is standard if big-emotion-expressing fare. However, a squalling herald of guitars quickly appear on the horizon, imposing enough to make you instantly forget that judgement and listen closer.
The band describe the track as ‘fusing the dreamy textures of Cocteau Twins with the raw intensity of Pixies‘ and they’re right on both counts. The texture and structure of Lucky Breaks is striking, and there is an intensity born not of frustration but of awe. There’s waves of synths, pops of white noise, and that churn of guitars returning around the reassuring embrace of the vocal.
With a lead out coda that brings all this together, what is incredibly striking is that even though there is a whole lot going on it doesn’t feel overload but rather wonderfully full. The band hasn’t held back, and have found a new way to play with the quiet-loud-quiet structure and really roll the melodies up, out and around each other.
‘Quiet victories / silent enemies / No mistakes in their lives / We catch all the lucky breaks’
The band said of the track, “If you’ve seen us live in the last year or so, you might remember this one. It quickly became our set closer and for good reason. It’s a song of gratitude. Lucky break as in, when you really need something good to happen, and it actually does.
“This song was a big turning point for us. It ushered in a wave of writing which now sits at about 15 or 20 songs. Tons of new music in the year to come!”
Lucky Breaks by The Rainlamps is out now digitally.
