Rain Cloud Nine

Just over a year ago we shared single Ephemeral from London dreampop band Rain Cloud Nine saying it was, ‘early days for this band but there’s definite promise here if you like your indie tilted toward shoegaze, and your pop most definitely dreamy’. Newly expanded to a three-piece the band are making good on that promise with latest release Right As Rain.

There’s plenty of shimmer and reverb here, as well as lashings of hazy melancholy – echoes of The Cure, The Jesus And Mary Chain, and Cocteau Twins. And while it’s definitely dreamy it’s also just discordant enough in the vocal and slides to give that slightly unsettled feeling, make you listen that bit harder for what is just under the surface of this sound. There are moments of intensity set against brief moments of peace. The fight and the resignation spar with each other throughout the song.

‘Forlorn not today / Borrow not to dance for sin’

The band say this track is, “an abstract, deceptively sweet insight into the strain of ‘wearing a mask’ in order to appear okay, to avoid, to simply exist in a world that largely does not resonate”.

The track is the first with new lead guitarist Tony Harper joining Katie Green (vocals, lyrics, bass) and Robert Alexander (rhythm guitar, backing vocals). The band’s previous tracks were already full sounding but with Right As Rain it’s brimming over with melodic lines deliciously weaving around each other.

Rain Cloud Nine are a band growing in confidence with their sound, and with Right As Rain have added another gem to their catalogue.

Right As Rain by Rain Cloud Nine is out digitally now.
