There is celebration, relief and inner conflict in the sound of O’r Diwedd, the latest single to be released by Ani Glass from her acclaimed second album Phantasmagoria. Sung in Welsh the title translates as At Last and it’s full of the glorious uplifting sound of emerging into the light at the end of a difficult time.
Glitchy beats are drenched in organic orchestral sweeps and swirling synth melodies, as the crystalline vocal cuts through like sunshine breaking through bruised storm clouds. Likened to early Enya there is something mythical about the interplay of light and dark both lyrically and in the way the sounds play together.
Ani Glass said, “O’r Diwedd is a song written during lockdown and is about finally seeing the light at the end of a long dark tunnel. Its rhythm is inspired by our inner conflict; the back and forth, the dragging of feet, whilst the music is lighter and more uplifting – the sound of hope. O’r Diwedd presents the conflict and joy of everyday life.”
While feeling both futuristic and yet drawn from ancient cultures, there is a huge amount of pop sensibility embedded in O’r Diwedd. It feels both expansive and intimate, dance-floor filling and headphone private, full of hard won joy. If you haven’t checked out Phantasmagoria (or 2020 debut Mirores) then let this be your entry point…at last.
O’r Diwedd by Ani Glass is out now digitally. It is taken from album Phantasmagoria available on vinyl, CD and digital and out now.
