Worcester punks Pegging Mitchell are here with righteous anger, melodic riffs, and shout-a-long snarl and wit with their debut single International Men’s Day.
Before we had flags wonkily spray painted on mini roundabouts as a substitute for community pride, we had ‘Hey sweetheart, when’s International Men’s Day’ from keyboard warriors set on bringing attention back to themselves any time women might speak out or seek support. Two activities with the same vibe: performative with a menacing undertone that sets us all on edge.
‘I don’t have to be on my period to think you’re a fucking cunt’
And Pegging Mitchell take aim at the what-about-ery deflection from women that is the ‘when’s International Men’s Day’ question with this single. Brilliantly upbeat and melodic twin guitars, solid back beats, and harmonies as well as half-spoken vocals: it’s a great punk track before we get to the subject matter.
Setting off with examples that try and slide by camouflaged as ‘edgy banter’ by the second verse things have escalated with frustration tipping over into vitriolic outburst. It’s a clever structure and many women will recognise this sharp and speedy escalation from their own experiences. These experiences are centred in the video with women holding handmade signs of things men have said to them as the track goes on. It’s disappointing, yet not surprising (or at least it won’t be to most women), to see a slew of sexist, racist, transphobic, and all round abusive comments some men think it’s acceptable to make (and then try to pass off as a joke if called out).
International Men’s Day is everything punk should be: tearing into issues, providing social commentary as entertainment without diminishing the cause, and setting it to a sound that is both fun and frantic. Incredible feminist punk energy: I can’t wait for more from this band.
International Men’s Day by Pegging Mitchell is out digitally now. In case you hadn’t picked up on it: there is an International Men’s Day, every year, 19 November.
