The rain is battering against the windows, fallen leaves plastered to walls, and in that seasonal dip between the veil-thinning and fire-gathered celebrations of autumn being here and the halls being decked ready for festivities. It is, if ever there was a turn of the wheel most suited to it, the season for emo.

Which is only partly the reason why I can’t stop listening to Paper Hearts, the debut single from GIRLTEETH. This is the sort of emo where the devastating beat, the layered grit and glimmer guitars, the wavering but earnest vocal all comes together to form veins of gold in the cracks of a broken heart.

Does it use typical emo tropes? Yes. Does it matter? Not when they are deployed as well as they are here. The little flourishes of guitar, the tremor in the vocal, the weight of the angst anchoring the whole song.

I know little more about this band than what they have shared via they Instagram but that makes the whole thing even better to me. In this age of performative transparency and over-sharing for the algorithm to deliver me a band around which there is still some mystic feels deliciously novel.

I don’t need to know much of this band to be convinced that Paper Hearts needs adding to your emo playlists, and that if you get the chance to hear it live it’s the sort of track which will sear itself on your soul. With the band already teasing another track to come in December, and a couple of live dates in Salford and Manchester announced GIRLTEETH is one band you want to get in early with.

Paper Hearts is the first single from GIRLTEETH and is out digitally on streaming services now.
