The Bernadette Maries

If you stick around long enough, most everything will come back around again. And so here is The Bernadette Maries with single The Closer You Look spiralling us round to the sweet and dreamy sounds of New Wave, deftly dragging a little psych indie into the orbit as it goes.

There’s a touch of New Order, a sprinkle of the Stone Roses, and smidgens of both Cocteau Twins and Fontaines D.C. here – if you’ve liked indie music at any point in the last 40 years, and favour a bittersweet flavour then you’re going to get on with this track.

Based in Belgium the band say their, “music speaks of love and existentialism, melancholy, and the meaning of our lives in a world that is slowly collapsing. It draws inspiration not only from music but also from society, books, and film.” Earnest, ethereal, and with a video evoking nostalgia for ’90s skate and slacker culture there sure is depth, feeling, and some lovely shimmering hooks behind male/female vocals for you to get stuck into.

Coming ahead of their 2026 album The Closer You Look mines a rich vein of guitar-led indie and while having plenty of recognisable touchstones it steers away from being derivative, and rather lays a fresh gaze on what has gone before.

The Closer You Look by The Bernadette Maries is out now digitally. It follows EP LvvV, released in February 2025 and available on Bandcamp, and ahead of their debut album set for release on Géographie in 2026.
