Possibly the most vital band around, and definitely one of the most exciting, metal-loving punk-supergroup YAKKIE are here with their third single ahead of the release of their debut album out next month. He Sleeps Alone is an anti-fuckboy grunge anthem with a cathartic sing-along chorus for anyone who’s found their very existence catches the blame for a straight man’s disappointment in himself.
There’s such a potent energy to this song – chopping riffs and shimmering percussion build to a wall of sound without losing the lightness and playfulness in both melodic and vocal lines.
‘YEARNING / FOR APPROVAL / HIS WHOLE LIFE A HOUSE OF CARDS’
Vocalist Janey Starling said, “He Sleeps Alone is an anti-fuckboy anthem written in the age of the situationship. This song is about the emotional loneliness that straight men create for themselves through desperate performances of masculinity that cut themselves off from real love. If there’s a “male loneliness epidemic”, it’s entirely men’s own doing through their self-absorption and superficiality. I know far too many hot and intelligent women who have been thrown into emotional turmoil by insecure men who are strangers to themselves and end up dragging others into their vortex of self-loathing.”
By the time we get to the breakdown the rhythm and melody are sparring, clipped beats and kiss-with-a-fist guitar lines. Overlapping vocals, and that repeated call out of ‘he sleeps alone’. Just…yes…punk perfection.
This is the straight-talk from a friend, honesty with kindness, and a straight-up fucking massive tune. If you’ve not already got YAKKIE‘s debut album ordered do it as soon as you’re able and in the meantime put this on repeat and know: toxic masculinity is the problem, not you.
