Boredom, it is said, has died. The instant gratification from the social media fruit machine has rewired us to seek relentless dopamine hits, and not drift off into daydreams, and imagination. That gives Out Of This World from Nell Davies a slightly nostalgic tone, a punk rock lullaby to dreaming of other worlds rather than being in the drudgery of this one.

‘The days are long /  the years are short / The clock keeps ticking round / Try to keep your innocence / But the world just drags you down’

Davies said Out Of This World is, “a song about being bored out of your mind and wanting to blast off into space to avoid doing your tax return” going on to say, “The lyrics are inspired by Baudelaire, the Situationist International, SE Hinton and a kids’ book on the solar system, but it turns out mostly people just like the swearing. Pearls before fucking swine.”

Taken from EP The End Of The World Or Whatever this single shows just as much songwriting chops as previous single Never Ever Ever, while presenting in a more sparkling, jangling, indiepop ballad form. There’s as much Heavenly here as there is Beabadobee.

Out Of This World is wonderful stuff from an artist who is playful yet precise with their craft and whose creativity is a a gift that keeps giving.

Out Of This World by Nell Davies is out digitally now. EP The End Of The World Or Whatever is also out digitally now. Read our review of previous single Never Ever Ever.
