Simon Love by Michael Wood

With his fourth studio album on the way in early April London-based Cardiff-born songwriter Simon Love is pairing upbeat guitar-pop with the humour-diffused poignancy on single But I’m Getting Used To It.

The track emerged from the raw grief which followed after Love’s father died in 2023. Of the track Love said, “It’s about the weird game of hide and seek that grief plays with you. Sometimes you’ll be alright and then one thing will remind you of them or remind you that they’re not around anymore and you’ll be back to square one.”

With a rousing intro and keenly observed and poignant lyrics there’s an echo of Elvis Costello here, as Love takes us through the everyday kicks grief can deliver. Harmonies soften the melody but not the experience, while the rise and fall guitar lines and the shimmering percussion, reflect the feeling of being carried along despite the permanent fracture you’ve sustained in losing someone you loved.

As much as the track shares the aftermath of loss, it also subtly shines a light on how love does not diminish. A beautiful and brilliant pop song, which sets the bar high for the rest of the album.

But I’m Getting Used To It by Simon Love is out digitally now. Album The One True Prince Of Wales (in exile after abdication) is out on 3 April 2026 via Hurrah Musica.
