Slant of Light

Full disclosure – Slant of Light are literally my dream band – they check all my boxes:

  • exemplary post-rock, from the north east of the US (I’m going to have guess they’re from Connecticut as that’s where they recorded this gem) – check
  • huge Albini-esque drums and growling bass overlaid with cleverly intertwining twin guitars – check
  • no-nonsense pristine production that gives the record both a huge sound and tons of space – less is more – big check
  • enigmatic and intriguing lyrics delivered with controlled melodic power with no need for vocal acrobatics, just oozing cool – check
  • little to no information available on-line about the band, no social media hyping, because the music speaks for itself – check

A rare thing these days and judging by the appearance of the band themselves, that would be because they are of an age where you found music by wandering into a record store, flicking through new releases from your favourite indie labels, swapping mixtapes with your friends or catching them live playing to 5 people in a dive bar on a wet Thursday night.

A time when you would take a chance on a record because the band looked cool or the artwork looked good. I would bet my life on this band’s number one influence being Slint and they grew up on a steady diet of Dischord and Touch and Go bands.  They might not be doing anything radically different in the genre’s space, but they stand on the collective shoulders of giants and fully deliver to the post-rock fan base.

Diving Bell is the single taken from their eponymous debut album, which I’ll be getting stuck into forthwith. Expect more words from me on Slant of Light soon.

Diving Bell by Slant of Light is out now. It is taken from the album Slant of Light which is out digitally now.
