The term ‘art rock’ is often bandied about a bit loosely, usually to refer to something that doesn’t quite follow conventional pop music structure or is perhaps in an odd time signature or might feature instruments not used as standard fair in a standard rock band. Rarely is it used to describe something that actually is art: a work of creative expression designed to be experienced and then provoke a thoughtful and emotive response. You might not necessarily like or enjoy that experience, but you would at least agree that it is ‘art’.
Finnish band Le Zok definitely had that in mind when they released current single Kärpäsvaikutus, which is Finnish for ‘The Fly Effect.’ On first listen, which I did without reading the press releases’ description of the song, (I always do, this – I like to form my own opinions about a song rather than regurgitate something from a press release) I can honestly say it is an assault on the senses especially if you watch the accompanying promo video.
The instrumentation is relentless, driving and buzzing like a recklessly wielded power tool. The vocal delivery is the same. Like a stream of fractured consciousness running at full tilt on stimulants (no I don’t speak Finnish, yes the vocals are in their native tongue, but don’t let that put you off) but this only accentuates the desired effect.
Chords change up and down in semi tones, making you feel like you’re on a rollercoaster. Intrusive keyboard stabs emulating a broken trumpet punctuate throughout with the sole purpose of throwing you off balance; as if you weren’t giddy enough already. You kind of want to get off the ride, but at the same time the adrenalin makes you want to stick with it to the end, very much like when you’re doom-scrolling through social media, your attention span reduced to zero.
Relentlessly moving on to the next slew of images and headlines that evoke feelings of anxiety and nausea. The accompanying video emphasises this even more so. The whole thing is comprised of the screen being divided into 4 quarters each depicting a hand held camera endlessly swooping around the band without any coherent direction or objective in a single shot as they perform the track. Like a fly. Yep. That’s when I got it.
To quote that press release that I wantonly ignored until the frankly discombobulating end, “The song, which depicts the restless and delusional thoughts of a fly, was written a few years ago. However, right now, with the world’s great tectonic plates shifting, the song is even more relevant than anyone could have imagined when it was written. The world is full of fly-like figures, some of whom buzz with frequencies whose effects are unknown everyone. Le Zok offers an even more ambiguous mood than usual, which does not seek to court the mainstream but allows consciousness to flow.”
Well, it does what it says on the tin and Kärpäsvaikutus is a challenging but clever snapshot of the current zeitgeist. It definitely provokes both thoughtful and emotional responses. Quite what they were, I’m not sure yet. I’ve not had time to fully process it. But it is art and I’m left anxiously curious to hear more.
Kärpäsvaikutus by Le Zok is out digitally now. Debut album Yksäs follows on 27 March 2026 via Inverse Records.
