Self-described as “blonking through the dystopia as best we know how” London’s th’sheridans have honed indiepop that may be lo-fi in sound but is always hi-fi in the feelings. They’re making a welcome return with the release of single Painted and a cover of Carly Rae Jepson‘s Emotion as a virtual b-side.
Painted is full of their trademark heart and vulnerability, as well as their fuzzy, scuzzy, effervescent indiepop. Never shying away from setting big feelings and bigger issues to song here, inevitably, the backdrop is the current dystopia it’s set to jangling and upbeat melody.
‘Everything in time, everything in time / But shouldn’t we wait with so much at stake?’
As Adam Karenina Sherif’s and Julia Oertli’s vocals circle each other an uplifting sense of hope emerges. It is at once a plea and an invitation, solidarity out of singularity, and moral as much as physical survival of These Times.
Painted is instantly recognisable as th’sheridans, but also moves their sound on slightly from past releases. Yes, it’s still delicate and DIY in sound, but there’s more layers here giving it an overall richer feel. What they’ve retained and bought to the fore is creation as an act of resistance. It’s great to have them back and reminded us of that with such an indiepop bop.
Painted by th’sheridans is out digitally now.
