Charley Stone

Resisting the tyranny of the definitive version Charley Stone has released a first single ahead of a second album, the ‘jangly, punky, pop’ I’ve Gotta Know.

Continuing a subtle theme of liminal spaces and whimsical romantic yearning I’ve Gotta Know is about being in a situationship. It is is the duality of playing it cool while craving commitment. It hangs in that moment where everything could soar, or it could wither. It is the rush of possibilities in the finest indiepop setting.

‘You say you’re not in love with me… not yet / Well that’s ok, I’m just happy passing time here’

Charley Stone said the track was, “Recorded as live ie drums, bass, electric guitar and vocals all together at the same time in the same room. Acoustic guitar and a bit of jazz organ overdubbed afterwards.

“The middle section is never played the same way twice, although since recording it I often find myself leaning towards those particular words and that particular number of bars. Recording a song can do that.”

Hailed as ‘the Jonathan Richman of our times’ Stone has provided her playing to many a band (Ye Nuns, Desperate Journalist, Salad, Sleeper, Keith TOTP and His Minor UK All-Star Celebrity Backing Band) and continues to thrill with her solo output.

Sweet, sassy, and really catchy I’ve Gotta Know seems like the stepping stone between Stone’s debut and second albums while more than holding its own as a single too. Beautiful, scrappy janglepop which should be soundtracking your days whether you know where you stand in your relationship or are still wondering where it will go.

I’ve Gotta Know by Charley Stone is out digitally now on Bandcamp.
