Those memories of childhood: playing out, the way the endless summer light became dappled through leaves, the satisfying scratch of bark on bare knees and scuffed palms as you climbed higher through the branches, the shouts of other children indistinct from below. High up here, that was freedom, that was independence. It was sovereignty of decisions and mistakes.
On Margaret, Minneapolis-based Absolutely Yours take this romanticised view of childhood and hang it in the shimmeringly soft threads of dreampop guitars. They cast a shadow across that nostalgia with deeper, yet still warm, guitar notes and lyrically the reality of imperfect adulthood.
‘I regret / trading time for whys / It’s hard to see / through tear soaked eyes / but I think this might / be the time of our lives’
It calls back to Cocteau Twins and The Sundays, or the softest of soft Beach House. Wistful melodically and poignant lyrically Margaret sets the scene for a beautiful dreampop longer listen with album Desire Paths, which is on the way from Absolutely Yours via label Sunday Records.
Margaret by Absolutely Yours is out digitally now. Album Desire Path is set to follow via Sunday Records, although a release date has not yet been shared.
