In times of attention-deficit long titles have become somewhat of a rarity but here, Bristol duo Mumble Tide eschew the viewable limit with the wonderfully wordily titled On My Deathbed There’s A Full Page (You Don’t Get To Read It).

Aside from the decidedly anti-modern character count there is a heap of snarky juxtaposition contained in the title which flows through into the alt-pop track. Bright in melody, with breezy riffs and sweet vocals lyrically the track reflects the mental gymnastics needed to sustain the duality in unrequited love. The reality, the fantasy, the one-sided conversations, the self-imposed fidelity to an idea that never blooms.

Vocalist Gina Leonard said of the track, “I wrote this song a while ago, it’s one about reflecting on years of unrequited love – about the light that can shine out of a void…. texting someone late at night who you know is bad for you.

“It’s about how chasing something that isn’t real requires creativity and resilience, but also ignorance. It’s one of our more poppy, youthful tracks but there’s a healthy dose of cynicism and confidence in there that I guess comes with age. We went through a lot of different versions with this one and nearly gave up on it many times, but we kept coming back to it and finally things fell into place.”

A shimmering and polished indie track it’s easy to imagine this one effortlessly wrapping itself around you as it floats from a radio as you pass. In that ephemeral embrace is the sharpest of feelings delivered in the softest of sounds, and with just enough of a barb to draw the track back from wallowing. It’s an approach which the band have shown before works well for them and On My Deathbed… builds upon it brilliantly, and brings much excitement for the longer release to come.

On My Deathbed There’s A Full Page (You Don’t Get To Read It) from Mumble Tide is out digitally now. Mini album Everything Ugly is out in early December, the band have tour dates through autumn supporting Liz Lawrence followed by a run of headline shows.
