London’s Breakup Haircut know how to write a pop-punk scream-along anthem for the tired, the broken hearted, the modern misfits.
With latest single I’m Okay (I Lied) from forthcoming second album No Worries If Not! (on INH Records) they smooth off the corners on their high impact riffs, give polished pace and layered vocals which come together to make you feel good about feeling bad.
Starting out at First Timers Fest with the goals of being friends, and playing fast they delivered on both with their 2019 EP What Do You Expect? I Found It On The Internet! (Hell Hath No Fury Records) and 2022 debut album Punk Dancing For Self Defence (Reckless Yes).
Across these earlier releases they embraced lo-fi scrappiness, wit and weariness wrapped in chunky riffs, and established themselves as firm favourites on the London indie scene and beyond.
‘Fake smile tried, but eyes won’t lie / Held hostage to habit and comfort / Held together by threads’
The band said of the track, “I’m Okay (I Lied) is our emo-pop confessional about all those little moments that quietly pile up at the end of a relationship – when no one’s happy, but it still feels impossible to let go.”
They say there was a lot of catharsis writing the track, and there’s certainly a lot of it when you sing-scream this back. There’s still a lot of innocence and playfulness in their sound, but it’s also getting bigger and more rounded – a band adept and comfortable enough to know where to buff and where to keep things sharp.
All in this is a track you can cry or dance to, which shows a band levelling up many of the musical ideas and the lyrical honesty from their earlier releases.
I’m Okay (I Lied) by Breakup Haircut is out now digitally. Debut album No Worries If Not! will follow on 28 November 2025 – order on Bandcamp.
