It’s 1964 and a barefoot Sandie Shaw has taken her yearning straight to the top of the charts, as everywhere she goes memories of a past love haunt her. ‘(There’s) always something there to remind me‘, she sings, punctuated by percussive clicks and soft horns.
The same line echoes as a backing vocal in Amelia & The Housewives single, Narcissist, but now the yearn is reversed as all the obsession and longing from Shaw becomes the caution and overwhelm when you’re dating someone obsessed only with themselves. Like the very best pop it dresses the dark times in shimmering brightness.
All harmony, upbeat and punchy melody, and ooh-la-la-las the track delivers its lyrical swipe with a smirk. It’s sing-a-long in the vein of Squeeze, while jangling along through humourous couplets like recent Heavenly. It’s gloriously fresh yet reassuringly classic indiepop.
“I should be jumping on your bones / But you left me in the rain outside of Waterstones”
Sharing how the song was written Amelia said, “We write most of our songs via the band’s WhatsApp group. I remember us writing Narcissist on a long bus trip from Brighton to Eastbourne to visit my grandparents, on the hottest day of the year. Jonny was in San Francisco where it was raining, I can’t remember where everyone else was or what the weather was doing. We decided not to have a bridge on the song as I rode though Seaford. We wrote two other songs on that bus trip, but none on the return trip. Most of our songs seem to get written on bus and train journeys. We’re the Woody Guthrie of indie-pop.”
Narcissist will do nothing to slow the growing excitement around this band as we head toward the release of their debut album in October. Able to reflect a serious topic without taking themselves seriously, Amelia & The Housewives are taking the best of classic pop and making the sound as their own.
Narcissist by Amelia & The Housewives is out digitally now. The self-titled debut album is due for release on 2 October 2026 via INH Records.
